The Scientific
Committee on Animal Health and Animal Welfare (SCAHAW)
This independent Scientific Committee gives the
Commission high quality scientific advice on animal health and animal welfare
issues. The Committee considers all available and up-to-date scientific data
and evidence and provides the Commission with a sound scientific basis for the
drafting of legislation and other proposals.
The SCAHAW held its final plenary meeting on 24-25 April
2003. Responsibility for the provision of scientific advice in this field has
now been transferred to the Panel on Animal Health and Welfare of the European
Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
The Sub-committee on Animal Welfare is responsible for
scientific and technical questions concerning the protection of animals,
notably with regard to animal husbandry, herd management, transport, slaughter
and experimentation.
The opinions adopted by the SCAHAW
are available on this web site, in English only.
