Three groups of
substances are regulated individually in
specific directives, i.e. vinyl chloride
monomer in plastics, nitrosamines in rubber
teats and soothers and BADGE, BFDGE and NOGE
in plastics and coatings.
Vinyl Chloride Monomer
(VCM) in food contact materials and
articles is regulated by
Council
Directive 78/142/EEC. To ensure a safe
product, the residual content of VCM in the
finished material or article is limited to
1mg/kg. Furthermore, VCM should not be
detectable in foodstuffs.
Commission
Directives 80/766/EEC and
81/432/EEC
give methods of analysis for VCM in the
finished product and in foodstuffs.
Nitrosamines
in rubber teats and soothers are
regulated by
Commission
Directive 93/11/EEC, which establishes
specific migration limits for these
substances and their derivatives.
BADGE
,
BFDGE
&
NOGE
in plastics, coatings and adhesives are
regulated by
Commission
Directive 2002/16/EC. For BADGE and BFDGE
as well as their derivatives, specific
migration limits have been set at 1mg/kg
foodstuff. Moreover, the Directive sets a
very strict limit for NOGE and its
derivatives which in practice rules out their
use as additives in coatings as there are no
sufficient data available on the toxicity of
this group of substances. The deadline for
the use of BADGE has been extended until
31.12.2005 by Commission Directive
2004/13/EC.
