Scientific advice on matters related to flavourings is given by the European Food Safety Authority. Until 2003 the opinions were given by the Scientific Committee on Food. Opinions are expressed on categories of flavourings and on single substances. In addition, groups of flavouring substances are evaluated according to Commission Regulation (EC) 1565/2000.

Opinions on categories of flavourings:

  • Smoke flavourings (expressed on 25 June 1993) pdf
  • Minutes' statement on smoke flavourings (expressed on 4 March 2003) pdf
  • Programme for the evaluation of flavouring substances (expressed on 2 December 1999) pdf

Opinions on single substances:

Flavouring group evaluations ( FGE):

  • FGE 01 : Branched-chain aliphatic saturated aldehydes, carboxylic acids and related esters of primary alcohols and branched-chain carboxylic acids from chemical groups 1 and 2 (17 flavouring substances) (expressed on 3 December 2002) pdf
  • FGE 02 : Branched- and straight-chain aliphatic saturated primary alcohols, aldehydes and related esters of primary alcohols and straight-chain carboxylic acids from chemical groups 1 and 2 (41 flavouring substances) (expressed on 3 December 2002) pdf
  • FGE.03 : Acetals of branched- and straight-chain aliphatic saturated primary alcohols and branched- and straight-chain saturated aldehydes, and an orthoester of formic acid, from chemical groups 1 and 2
