Implementation of the Directive - Monitoring of zoonoses in food and animals

Until 2004, the European Commission publishes a annual Community report on trends and sources of zoonotic agents in animals, feedingstuffs, food and man in the European Union. tThis report was prepared by the CRL for the epidemiology of zoonoses in Berlin and was compiled in accordance with Article 5 of Council Directive N° 92/117/EEC.

From 2005, the Animal Diseases Transmissible to Humans (Zoonoses) Unit of the European Food Safety Authority, in collaboration with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), has been entrusted to prepare the yearly EU summary. The Commission has established a mandate to EFSA concerning the monitoring of zoonoses:

The EU reports are based on annual reports submitted by the Member States and Norway and they contain a valuable overview of the prevalence of zoonoses in the Community. They can be consulted at the website of the Animal Diseases Transmissible to Humans (Zoonoses) Unit of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)

In order to obtain information on antimicrobial resistance which is comparable between Member States and in time, Commission Decision 2007/407/EC of 12 June 2007 on a harmonised monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella in poultry and pigs was adopted.
