Development of Detection Methods
-
- In the early
1990's, the European Commission financed via
its Reference Bureau (BCR) a two-year
research programme for the development and
validation of detection methods for foods
treated by ionising radiation. In the course
of this programme, a number of efficient
methods were developed.
In 1993, the European Commission gave
a mandate to the European Committee for
Standardisation (CEN) to standardise these
methods. CEN created within its Technical
Committee 275 'Food analysis - Horizontal
Methods' (CEN/TC 275) the working group 8
'Irradiated Foodstuffs' (CEN/TC275/WG8) which
had its first meeting in November 1993

CEN Standards
-
- As a result of the
work of CEN/TC 275/WG 8, the following
European Standards are available from
national standardisation institutes http://www.cen.eu/catweb/cwen.htm.
- These European
Standards have been adopted by the Codex
Alimentarius Commission as General Methods
and are referred to in the Codex General
Standard for Irradiated Foods in section 6.4
on 'Post-irradiation verification'.
