The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) was established and funded by the European Community in 2002 as an independent source of scientific advice on food and feed safety, including animal health and animal welfare of food producing animals.

In the occasion of its 5th Anniversary, a “Scientific Forum: From Safe Food to Healthy Diets: EU Risk Assessment Past, Present and Future” was held in Brussels on 20 and 21 November 2007.

On the second day of the Scientific Forum, Parallel Sessions were organised one of which was dedicated to Animal Welfare and was chaired by DG SANCO. Animal welfare is a relatively young but still well established scientific discipline.

During the dedicated session, the main branches of animal welfare science (animal, housing, society and policy) were discussed as well as the perspectives for developing recognized methodologies for Risk Assessment in animal welfare through synergies of international organisations such as the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the European Commission and EFSA.

The video-on-demand recording of this event is available at the following website.
