Bovine Semen

Basic directive

The general animal health requirements governing intra-Union trade in and imports into the European Union of semen of domestic animals of the bovine species are laid down in Council Directive 88/407/EEC.
This Directive harmonises:

Only distribution and placement of semen in the country of destination are not covered by the Directive, being a matter for the Member States. However, they should be compatible with the rules laid down in the Treaty of the Functioning of the European Union.


Implementation arrangements for imports of bovine semen are laid down by Commission decisions adopted by the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCFCAH):
