Increased mortality in Pacific oysters

Mortality in Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) increased since 2008 in some areas of Ireland, France, the Netherlands and the UK. Investigations suggested that a new strain of ostreid herpesvirus-1 - OsHV-1 μνar – is the cause.

The EU introduced measures to control the mortality rate of Pacific oysters caused by the Ostreid herpesvirus 1 μνar, and prevent its spread. Measures applied until 30 April 2011.

Current EU measures

The Commission approved surveillance programmes by Ireland and UK to prevent the spread of the virus to areas where it had not been detected through:

  • targeted surveillance;
  • bio-security measures;
  • restrictions on the movement of Pacific oysters in all surveillance areas.

Ireland detected OsHV-1 μνar in 2 bays in summer 2011, and asked to change the geographical coverage of the surveillance programme.
