On 14 February, Athens will host the 1st Stakeholders' Workshop on Adriatic-Ionian Maritime Affairs. Today, at the 2009 Regular Meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT) currently taking place in Brazil, the EU will present a new proposal which would lead to substantial progress in the conservation and management of swordfish in the Mediterranean.

The Fisheries Council meeting in Luxembourg on 19 and 20 October took a number of important decisions and made headway on a number of issues. The discussions were dominated by the Commission's proposals for a root-and-branch reform of the CFP control framework and for fishing possibilities in the Baltic Sea for 2010.

The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), which met in Tunis last week for its annual session, adopted a number of recommendations towards sustainable fisheries management.

L'Union européenne est bordée d'océans et de mers. Elle compte au total 70 000 km de côtes. Près de la moitié des citoyens européens vivent à moins de 50 km de la mer. Les régions maritimes génèrent près de 40 % du PIB de l'UE, et 90 % du commerce extérieur de l'UE transite par la mer, ce qui est considérable.

Afin de mieux faire connaître les mers et océans d'Europe, la Commission européenne a élaboré un atlas maritime européen, à l'intention de tous ceux qui s'intéressent au monde maritime et à notre patrimoine maritime commun. Les mers celtiques comprennent la Manche, la mer d'Irlande, la mer Celtique proprement dite et les eaux situées à l'ouest des Îles britanniques.
