The European Commission welcomes the results of the 85th meeting of the Inter American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) held between 10 and 15 June in Veracruz, Mexico.
The bluefin tuna purse seine season lasting from 26 May to 24 June came to an early end this year for European purse-seiners. Member States involved in this fishing activity (Spain, France, Italy, Malta and Greece) have exhausted their quotas and have therefore closed their fisheries activities: purse seiners are back in the ports.
The latest figures on the fish stocks in EU waters indicate that the European Commission's efforts to phase out overfishing have paid off.
