After the European Commission had warned three countries - Curaçao, Ghana and Korea - that they were not doing enough to fight illegal fishing in November 2013, it will now grant each country an extra six months to improve the situation. The Commission will review their progress made at the end of this period.
The European Commission has expressed its disappointment with the outcomes of the 87th Annual meeting of the Inter American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC), which finished on 18 July in Lima, Peru.
The European Commission welcomes Morocco’s ratification of a Fisheries Protocol which is set to open the door for European vessels to go back fishing in Moroccan waters after a pause of more than two years. The European Union and Morocco had concluded the 4-year fisheries deal in December 2013, however its entry into force was pending ratification by Morocco.

Ribolov zunaj EU

Evropska ribiška plovila ulovijo več kot četrtino vsega ulova zunaj voda EU. Približno 8 % vsega ulova EU (2004–2006) je v skladu s sporazumi o ribolovu z državami zunaj EU, nadaljnjih 20 % ulova je na odprtih morjih, zlasti na območjih, ki so v pristojnosti regionalnih organizacij za upravljanje ribištva.

EU je pomembna ribolovna sila in največji enotni svetovni trg za proizvode iz ribištva. S sodelovanjem v številnih mednarodnih organizacijah spodbuja boljše upravljanje, saj razvija in izvaja politiko upravljanja ribištva in pomorsko pravo. Tesno sodeluje s partnerji po vsem svetu v okviru Združenih narodov, vključno z Organizacijo Združenih narodov za prehrano in kmetijstvo (FAO) in drugimi organi, denimo Organizacijo za gospodarsko sodelovanje in razvoj (OECD).

Trgovina z ribiškimi proizvodi

Evropska unija je največji enotni svetovni trg za ribiške proizvode in je neto uvoznica rib in ribiških proizvodov.

EU vsaka tri leta določi avtonomne tarifne kvote za nekatere ribe in ribiške proizvode. Avtonomne tarifne kvote omogočajo uvoz določene količine proizvodov v EU po znižani tarifni stopnji – običajno 0 %, 4 % ali 6 %. S kvotami lahko EU ob nezadostni ponudbi poveča oskrbo z osnovnimi surovinami, od katerih je odvisna predelovalna industrija EU.
