Following the conclusion of the new Coastal State mackerel agreement, which was signed in London on 12 March, agreement was reached on 13 March between the European Union and the Faroe Islands on reciprocal exchanges of fishing opportunities in each other’s waters for 2014. This agreement follows a period of four years, during which time the Parties had not concluded arrangements, due to the long-standing mackerel dispute.

Fishing opportunities under the Protocol currently in force

Fishing by the EU fleet was limited to 23 seiners and 7 pole-and-line vessels for tuna fishing. Demersal fishing was limited to 410 grt for wet fishing and 2,750 for freezer vessels.

The European Union's financial contribution included an annual amount of 100,000 euros for scientific programmes and study grants.
