Consultation on an EU Action Plan for Sharks
The European Commission has carried out a public consultation to prepare an EU Action Plan on the conservation and management of sharks, inside and outside Community waters.
The Action Plan, which was adopted on 5 February 2009, outlines the measures already in place, and describes the additional measures needed to manage sharks in a comprehensive and coherent way. The Action Plan has been submitted to the Council and the European Parliament through a Communication explaining the background and the rational for it. The implementation of the Action Plan will entail the modification of a number of existing regulations and, likely, the adoption of new ones.

Before the consultation, the Commission identified nine fields of action that it believed needed to be addressed in the Action Plan. Stakeholders were invited to express their views on these fields of action, and present their opinions as to what further measures would be appropriate to reinforce the policy of the European Community on the conservation and management of sharks. The input received in the consultation process was used as a basis for discussions and in the preparation of the impact assessment of the Action Plan.

Deadline for the consultation was 15 February 2008
