Maria Damanaki, European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries decided to close the bluefin tuna fishery to purse seiners in the Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic, due to the exhaustion of the quotas allocated to them.

At their Council meeting in Brussels today, fisheries ministers addressed a wide range of issues.

On the conservation of fisheries resources through technical measures, the Council reached agreement on a Presidency compromise.

Mesures techniques

Règles de pêche

Les engins de pêche utilisés dans l'UE doivent respecter un certain nombre de règles techniques.

On entend par «mesures techniques» l'ensemble des règles qui régissent les zones de pêche et les engins de pêche utilisés, par opposition aux quantités (effort de pêche) et/ou aux captures (TAC et quotas) autorisées.

Les mesures techniques portent sur:

les tailles minimales de débarquement;
les tailles minimales de maillage des filets;
les zones et les saisons de fermeture;
la limitation des prises accessoires (captures accidentelles d'espèces non ciblées);
les critères d'emploi d'engins de pêche plus sélectifs (afin de réduire les prises accessoires);
les mesures destinées à protéger l'environnement marin.

Les mesures techniques sont très variables selon le bassin maritime et les conditions locales.
