Legislation on fisheries conservation including technical measures (EUR-Lex)

News
The European Commission has welcomed the outcomes of the 36th Annual Meeting of the North Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO) held in Vigo, Spain from 22 to 26 September 2014.
The setting of Total Allowable Catch for NAFO fish stocks will take centre stage at the 36th Annual Meeting to be held in Vigo, Galicia from 22-26 September 2014.
On 26 September, the European Commission organises a seminar where scientists and experts will discuss the state of European fish stocks and the economics of fishing fleets around the EU.

Technical measures

Technical measures are a broad set of rules which govern how, where and when fishermen may fish. They are established for all European sea basins, but they differ considerably from one basin to another, in accordance with the regional conditions.

The measures may include:

  • minimum landing sizes and minimum conservation sizes
  • specifications for design and use of gears
  • minimum mesh sizes for nets
  • requirement of selective gears to reduce unwanted catches;
  • closed areas and seasons;
  • limitations on by-catches (catches of unwanted or non-target species)
  • measures to minimize the impact of fishing on the marine ecosystem and environment.

Following up on the reform of the CFP, rules for technical measures are under review to accommodate two newly introduced elements under the new CFP (the landing obligation and regionalisation).
