TAC et quotas

Les totaux admissibles de captures (TAC) sont les limites de captures fixées pour la plupart des grands stocks commerciaux de poisson. Ces TAC sont proposés par la Commission, qui se fonde sur des avis scientifiques concernant l'état des stocks concernés, avant d'être adoptés par le Conseil des ministres de la pêche.
Les TAC sont fixés une fois par an pour la plupart des stocks et tous les deux ans pour les espèces d'eau profonde. Ils sont de plus en plus souvent établis conformément aux plans pluriannuels.
Les TAC sont répartis entre les pays de l'Union européenne dans le cadre d'un système dit de «stabilité relative», qui maintient la stabilité des quotas nationaux les uns par rapport aux autres, même si la quantité totale de poisson pouvant être capturée varie en fonction de la productivité des stocks.
