Suurimmat sallitut saaliit ja kiintiöt
Kaupallisesti tärkeimmille kalalajeille on asetettu pyyntirajoitus, jossa määritetään suurin sallittu saalis. Komissio tekee tieteellisten lausuntojen perusteella ehdotuksen kunkin kalakannan saaliin enimmäismäärästä, ja kalastusasioista vastaavat ministerit tekevät päätöksen neuvoston kokouksessa.
Suurin sallittu saalis määritellään useimmille kalalajeille vuosittain ja syvänmeren lajeille joka toinen vuosi. Yhä useampien lajien kohdalla tämä tehdään monivuotisen suunnitelman mukaisesti.
Suurimman sallitun saaliin pyyntimäärä jaetaan EU-maiden kesken nk. suhteellisen vakauden periaatteen mukaisesti. Näin kansalliset kiintiöt pysyvät vakaina suhteessa toisiinsa, vaikka pyydettävän kalan sallittu määrä vaihteleekin kalakantojen tuotantokyvyn perusteella.
