Il sistema UE di controlli sulla pesca
Per garantire il rispetto delle norme sulla pesca, l'UE dispone anche di un sistema di controlli e dei necessari strumenti per assicurarne l'applicazione.
Per far rispettare le norme della politica comune della pesca esiste un sistema di controllo finalizzato a:
- garantire che vengano catturati solo i quantitativi di pesce autorizzati
- raccogliere i dati necessari per gestire le opportunità di pesca
- chiarire il ruolo svolto dai paesi dell'UE e dalla Commissione
- assicurare che le norme siano applicate con le stesse modalità a tutti i pescatori e che esistano sanzioni uniformi in tutta l'UE
- garantire che i prodotti della pesca siano tracciabili e controllati in tutte le fasi del ciclo di approvvigionamento, dalla cattura alla tavola.
Il sistema è disciplinato dal regolamento sui controlli 
nel settore della pesca, che è entrato in vigore il 1° gennaio 2010 e ha modernizzato radicalmente la strategia dell'UE in questo settore. In particolare, ha introdotto modifiche in linea con le rigorose misure adottate dall'UE nel 2008 per combattere la pesca illegale.
