Vattenbruk – fiskodling

Vattenbruk innebär odling av fisk, skaldjur och vattenväxter, t.ex. alger. Det är en av världens snabbast växande livsmedelsbranscher, som redan står för ungefär hälften av all fisk vi äter.

Vattenbruket står för nästan en femtedel av EU:s fiskproduktion och sysselsätter ungefär 65 000 människor. EU:s vattenbruk är känt för att ha hög kvalitet på produkterna och avancerade produktionsmetoder.

Det har dock inte lett till en ökad produktion. EU:s produktion har varit mer eller mindre konstant sedan 2000 medan den i övriga världen har ökat med en tredjedel. De olika delarna inom branschen har också utvecklats åt nästan helt olika håll. EU:s produktion av havsfisk fortsätter att växa medan produktionen av blötdjur och sötvattensfisk stadigt har minskat de senaste åren.

EU stöder utvecklingen mot ett mer konkurrenskraftigt och miljövänligt vattenbruk, både genom Europeiska fiskerifonden och EU:s forskningsprogram . År 2009 föreslog kommissionen en strategi för EU:s framtida vattenbruk.
