In response to the concerns raised by several citizens about animal welfare in fish farming, the European Commission would like to clarify that the health and welfare of farmed fish is important for EU aquaculture.
One of the world's fastest growing food sectors, aquaculture accounts for about half of the fish eaten worldwide every year.
Fish farming is healthy and can help tackle overfishing and protect wild fish stocks. That is the message to be delivered today by European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Maria Damanaki, at a specially organised event at the Seafood Expo Global held in Brussels.

Akkwakultura

It-trobbija tal-ħut, il-molluski u l-pjanti tal-baħar hi waħda mis-setturi tal-ikel li qed jikber malajr u diġà jipprovdi lill-pjaneta b’madwar nofs il-ħut kollu li nieklu.

Fl-Ewropa, l-akkwakultura tirrappreżenta kważi 20% tal-produzzjoni tal-ħut, u timpjega direttament madwar 80,000 persuna. L-akkwakultura tal-UE hi magħrufa għall-kwalità għolja, is-sostenibbiltà u l-istandards tal-protezzjoni tal-konsumatur.

Il-produzzjoni globali tal-UE baqgħet bejn wieħed u ieħor kostanti fil-volum mis-sena 2000 filwaqt li l-produzzjoni globali kibret b’rata ta’ kważi 7% kull sena.

Il-Kummissjoni biħsiebha tagħti spinta lill-akkwakultura permezz tar-Riforma tal-Politika Komuni tas-Sajd, u ppubblikat Linji ta' Gwida Strateġiċi li jippreżentaw prijoritajiet komuni u għanijiet ġenerali fil-livell tal-UE. Ġew identifikati erba’ oqsma ta’ prijorità f’konsultazzjoni mal-partijiet interessati rilevanti kollha:

  • it-tnaqqis tal-piżijiet amministrattivi
  • it-titjib tal-aċċess għall-ispazju u l-ilma
  • iż-żieda fil-kompetittività
  • l-isfruttar minn vantaġġi kompetittivi minħabba kwalità għolja, u standards relatati mas-saħħa u l-ambjent.

Fuq il-bażi tal-linji ta' gwida, il-Kummissjoni u l-pajjiżi tal-UE se jikkollaboraw biex jgħinu jsaħħu l-produzzjoni u l-kompetittività tas-settur. Il-pajjiżi tal-UE huma mitluba li jistabbilixxu pjanijiet multiannwali li jippromwovu l-akkwakultura. Il-Kummissjoni se tgħin fil-koordinazzjoni u l-iskambju tal-aħjar prattiki.

Imrobbi fl-UE – fergħa tal-kampanja Inseparabbli, tippromwovi ikel tal-baħar sostenibbli u tenfasizza l-importanza tal-akkwakultura, bħala wieħed mis-setturi l-aktar li qed jikbru malajr fid-dinja.
