EU-LAC Madrid Summit, 18 May 2010

The VI EU-LAC Summit of Heads of State and Government takes place in Madrid (Spain) on 18 May 2010. In its margins, a series of bilateral mini-Summits are held with specific LAC countries and sub-regions (16 May, Summit with Mexico; 17 May, Summits with Chile and CARIFORUM; 19 May, Summits with the Andean Countries, Central America and Mercosur). Preceding the Summit, an EU-LAC Foreign Minister’s meeting is planned for May 17th.

Several preparatory events – some of them co-financed by the Commission – will be organised prior to the Summit.

The central theme of the Summit is “Towards a new phase of the bi-regional association: innovation and technology for sustainable development and social inclusion”.

The European Commission’s contribution to the Summit is primarily based on the 2009 Commission Communication on Latin America, “The European Union and Latin America: Global Players in Partnership”.

Two main documents are expected to be prepared for the Summit:

• a short political declaration including references to i) global issues; ii) EU-LAC relations and iii) to the central theme of the Summit, i.e. how innovation and technology can support sustainable development and social inclusion.

and, linked to the political declaration,

• an Action Plan around the central theme of the Summit, but also including important initiatives/dialogues in other key areas such as environment, climate change, energy, regional integration, social and territorial cohesion, etc.
