The EU and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) share a commitment to regional integration as a means of fostering regional stability, building prosperity, and addressing global challenges. The EU fully supports ASEAN’s renewed efforts to build a closer relationship amongst its member states.
The EU is seeking to increase dialogue and cooperation with ASEAN, as well as to pursue closer coordination on regional and international issues. The Nuremberg Declaration and the joint EU-ASEAN Plan of Action aim to enhance the longstanding EU-ASEAN partnership by pursuing closer cooperation on political, security, economic, socio-cultural and development issues, as well as in the field of energy security and climate change/environment. The Plan of Action was endorsed by the first-ever EU-ASEAN Summit ( Joint Declaration ) on 22 November, 2007 in Singapore, organised to celebrate 30 years of formal relations.
ASEAN encompasses ten South East Asian countries:Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
