More than two million people (mainly women and immigrants) are working in Italian homes as domestic collaborators and family helpers; in simple terms, more than two million maids and caregivers.
The number speaks for itself, but does not tell us much about how their presence contributes to the country’s economic and social balance. Yet, despite their being so widespread, this sector is barely recognized and certainly not represented. The book aims to correct this situation both by analytically reconstructing the roles they play and by estimating their impact on the GDP.
