Join the debate and listen to our high-level speakers and experts at the joint conference on immigration as a source of wealth and duties for Europe.
Minorities and migrants nowadays are too often perceived by the European public opinion as a growing threat. However, according to Eurostat's projections, Europe needs an immigrant population both for demographic reasons and to fill the shortfall in the supply of skilled workers. The conference will discuss immigrants' contribution to European societies and economies as well as the moral obligation of Europe to respect their fundamental rights.
The conference aims to mobilise all stakeholders against the development of prejudices by focusing on good practices in managing immigration and to produce proposals for national and European policy-makers.
Speakers in the debates will include:
- Staffan Nilsson, EESC President
- Nils Muižnieks, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights
- Jean-Paul Delevoye, President of the French Economic, Social and Environmental Council
- Philippe Fargues, Director of the Migration Policy Centre, European University Institute
- Edgar Morin, philosopher and sociologist
They will try to answer to questions such as: Has the crisis affected our capacity to have a balanced view of the costs and benefits of immigration? Are EU leaders and politicians doing enough to counter the rise of far-right ideologies and parties?
This is my home now, a documentary by Saddie Choua, which follows the stories of three women of migrant background living in the Europe, struggling for their equal rights and at the same time enriching their host communities, will be screened at 13:45.
