The enrolment of the public in the Conference of the Observatory of Immigration is now open. The event will take place on 18th December 2012 in the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal. Promoted by the High Commission for Immigration and Intercultural Dialogue (ACIDI, I.P.), the conference will pay close attention to the nation-wide research study 'Diagnosis of the Immigrant Population in Portugal: Challenges and Possibilities'. This study is part of the Portugal Immigrant Series composed of 22 local studies characterizing the immigrant population living in Portugal, with the scientific coordination of Professor Jorge Malheiros of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon (IGOT-UL).
The national study draws a global diagnosis of the immigrants coming from non-EU countries during the first decade of the 21st century and was obtained through the application of a questionnaire to 5673 third-country nationals. The database also includes variables characterizing the family members residing with the respondent totalling 13634 individuals and will be presented during the conference.
The studies were funded by the European Fund for the Integration of Third-Country Nationals and were promoted by the Network of Local Centres to Support Immigrant Integration. The municipalities with local studies are Albufeira, Almada, Braga – Guimarães, Beja, Castelo Branco, Faro, Funchal - Santa Cruz - Câmara de Lobos, Guarda, Lousã, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Moita, Montijo, Moura, Oeiras, Ponta Delgada, Vila Nova de Gaia, Trofa, Santarém, Seixal, Sesimbra, Sintra and São Brás de Alportel.
Similarly to previous editions, the event intends to promote the debate and reflection around the integration of immigrants at the local level, mobilizing the debate among researchers, political decision-makers, representatives of the civil society and all interested in the issue of migration, with particular attention to the local authorities.
