In 2011 the Centre for Public Policy PROVIDUS identified opportunities and obstacles for the political participation of third country nationals in three EU countries including Latvia. The research revealed that Latvia needs to help non-government organizations representing immigrants to increase their capacity to participate in policy making. At the same time, there is a need to establish consultative mechanisms where these NGOs could nominate their representatives to engage in a dialogue about policies that affect the interests of this group.
“Guidelines on National Identity, Civil Society and Integration Policy for 2012-2018” include an aim in 2012 to establish a national consultative council in Latvia with the participation of immigrants and NGOs representing this group, as well as representatives of ministries and municipalities.
To learn from the experience of other EU countries, PROVIDUS organizes the conference „Consultative mechanisms on immigrant integration” on 12 June, at the EU house, Aspazijas bulvāris 28, 2nd floor, 10:00-14:00 o’clock.
At the conference PROVIDUS will present a study on consultative mechanisms in the EU, and provide an opportunity to learn in more detail about the examples of Finland, Spain and Ireland. Based on this, the principles that should be taken into account when establishing a consultative council for immigrant integration in Latvia will be discussed. Conference program is available at PROVIDUS website.

The conference takes place in the framework of the project "Capacity building of NGOs representing third country nationals” financed by the European Fund for the Integration of Third Country nationals (with 75% of funding coming from the Fund, and 25% from Latvian state budget).
