The composition and direction of migratory flows to and from Portugal has changed considerable with the economic crisis affecting the country. This issue will be analysed in the 14th Meeting of training of social-pastoral agents for international migration, an event that will take place between 17th and 19th January 2014 in the Portuguese city of Albergaria-a-Velha.
During the 3 days of the event researchers, academics, religious and non-religious members will present and discuss results from on-going projects on international migration and daily experiences with migrants. Professors Ana Paula Beja-Horta (Open University, Portugal) and João Peixoto (ISEG - University of Lisbon, Portugal) will show academic results of their research. The Bishop of Aveiro, D. António Francisco dos Santos, will deliver the opening lecture referring to the relevance of migration for the Catholic Church. On Sunday morning, in the city of Aveiro, the cardinal of Lisbon, D. Manuel Clemente, will close the event with a lecture focusing on the message of Pope Francisco about migrants and refugees.
The event also celebrates the 19th January as the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, according to the Catholic Church, and is organized by the Portuguese Catholic Work for Migration, the Portuguese branch of Caritas and the Catholic agency Ecclesia.
