Seminar on Cross-cultural competency. Resolution and prevention of honour-related conflicts
(Communication - International - English)
Family conflicts among some ethnic minorities can be the cause of crises, violence, and extreme disruptions of happiness and the success of each member of the family. Often it is not only a question of saving one young person in the family but rather helping all the members to help themselves.
Honour-related issues are complex and require perceptual changes in Nordic ways of analysing social difficulties. Social work is challenged by new cultural patterns and behaviours, which put pressures not only on the families but also on each of us that are concerned with these matters. Studies have shown that when working with ethnic minority families, the professionals have difficulty keeping their personal views away from influencing their work. What are the complications attached to working with these cases? How do we change work routines in order to help families? Professionals working with these multicultural challenges are the catalyst for sustainable change in harmful family traditions among some ethnic minority citizens. This can only be done through respect, dialogue and knowledge.
