In June 1873 the first group Hindustanis (Surinamese of Indian descent) labourers arrived from India in Suriname to work at the plantations. About a hundred years later, prior to the independence of Suriname, large groups of Hindustanis migrated to the Netherlands; most settled in The Hague. To conmemorate the occasion, a mini-conference will be held on the success and failure of Hindustanis in the Netherlands. During the conference, Prof. Jan Pronk will give the first lecture about the great migration of Surinamese around the independence of Suriname.
