Abstract (EN)

It is an initiative that aims to bring together Basque people and families with foreign families to meet around a meal in their private home; this activity is performed simultaneously in other EU countries. Afterwards a public acknowledgement event is carried out at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre of San Sebastian, with the objective of increasing the project’s visibility through a multiplier effect and thus encouraging new meeting spaces, mutual recognition, and solidarity among people with equal rights.

Angelegenheit/Herausforderung und
Ziele/Annahmen

The main objective is to involve people of social and institutional relevance in reducing social prejudices and stereotypes and to build an inclusive neighbourhood with the normalised coexistence of people from diverse backgrounds. This is achieved through three general objectives:

  1. Fight existing prejudices towards people of foreign origin that coexist in neighbourhoods, towns, and municipalities in the Basque Country
  2. Favour a normalised coexistence in these contexts;
  3. Promote and strengthen the role of volunteering as an agent of social change.

Each general objective is achieved through a series of specific objectives such as:

  • increasing mutual knowledge between natives and immigrants;
  • promoting social recognition of foreign people and their fundamental role in the construction of a plural citizenship;
  • introducing a new concept of inclusive neighbourhood that promotes respect and acceptance of the customs, practices, opinions, and beliefs of the "different";
  • promoting the creation of networks of mutual support and solidarity between native people and foreigners.
Wie funktioniert das?

The project organises simultaneous meals in the Basque Country with native families and foreign families. Previously in 2012 this event was organised on the 18th November and in 2013 on the 17th November.

In 2014 the event will be carried out on the 23rd November and it will involve 100 simultaneous meals with 100 native families and 100 foreign families, there will also be 100 facilitating people to ease conversation and ensure the succesful carrying out of the project.

Furthermore in 2014 there will be a production of a documentary tfor the dissemination of this event, and there will also be a socio-cultural event celebrated on the 29th November 2014 at the Victoria Eugenia Theatre of San Sebastian to increase the visibility of the project.

  • Enhances mutual understanding between natives and immigrants.
  • Develops new skills to identify bias and stereotypes.
  • Encourages empathy.
  • Contributes to the prevention of intercultural conflicts.
  • Makes a positive appreciation of diversity.
  • Introduces a new concept of inclusive neighbourhood that promotes attitudes of respect and acceptance of the customs, practices, opinions, and beliefs of the "other".
  • Promotes the creation of networks of mutual support and solidarity between native and foreign people.
  • Promotes a normalisation of participation of foreigners in the social life of neighbourhoods, towns, and municipalities.
  • Strengthen the role of volunteers.
Evaluierung

Regarding qualitative procedures, an evaluation aspect will be present throughout the process. A specific time is allocated in coordination meetings for evaluating the progress of the proposed activities. The assessment carried out throughout the process is analyzed and evaluated by the technical team. Upon completion of the activities a discussion group is convened with representatives from all stakeholders to make a final assessment. An evaluation report process is delivered as a source of verification.

Regarding quantitative procedures, an ad hoc questionnaire is given to the participants (native and foreign families) and facilitators. The questionnaire includes items related to the achievement of the objectives, as well as open questions that can be subsequently quantified for quantitative treatment.

Wer profitiert?
  • Foreign population: (preferably from outside the EU) 100 families with an average of 5 people per family = 1000 people.
  • Native population from different municipalities: 100 families = 1000 people.
  • The facilitators present in each meal receive specific training in the preparation phase: 100 facilitators.
  • Volunteers: 80 people
  • Social and institutional agents: 80
  • General population: Indirectly, may attend and/or see, hear, on TV, radio and newspapers, as well as through the awareness material
