Learning paths from one country to another: A project
Diversität in der Personalpolitik
BILDUNG UND KULTUR
Kulturelle Aktivitäten und Vielfalt
City / Region
The project has developed a model for language training in the country of origin before entering the Finnish labour market. In addition, the arriving employee is taught professional Finnish in their particular field (e.g. 'nursing Finnish' for nurses). The arriving employee is also provided with basic information about Finland and Finnish society. Language training continues shortly after arrival in Finland. As an integral part of the model, the receiving peer workers’ multicultural skills are developed. Language training is also provided to the family members of the arriving employee.
Angelegenheit/Herausforderung und Ziele/Annahmen
The goal of the project is to develop and accumulate Finnish language study material in different professional fields e.g. nurses, dentists, physicians and cleaning staff. One of the challenges is that learning Finnish is time consuming, and the length depends on the student’s mother tongue. Furthermore, there is a huge lack of survey information integrating grammar and professional vocabulary. The goal of the project in quantitative terms:
number of persons reached: 150
number of working or educational days for the persons reached: 3000
number of the companies reached: 18
The language courses organised by the project are always tailored, depending on the empolyer’s and employees’ needs and profession. Learning language is seen as a process which is related to the arriving employee’s performance of the job. Studies focus on the acquisition of professional Finnish.
Wie funktioniert das?
During the project, there have been several language courses in different countries of origin (e.g. in Poland, Spain, Estonia and Bulgaria). Generally, participants completed 100 to 200 hours of language training in their country of origin. At the same time, the receiving peer workers in Finland obtain training on how to receive the arriving employees in the best possible way. After the arrival, the language training continues for example 6-10 hours per week.
The results of the project in quantitative terms (so far):
number of the persons reached: 182
number of working or educational days for the persons reached: 3162
number of the companies reached: 24
Thanks to the project, there is now a model to teach Finnish for the arriving employees. The path begins at the country of origin continuing after arrival in Finland. A lot of innovative study material has been generated by the project.
Constant evaluation has been performed by the steering group. The project has succeeded in the language courses as well, according to the feedback of the students. Starting the language studies already in the country of origin is now seen as an advantageous concept. In addition, the method of integrating grammar in professional vocabulary was the other important outcome.
Migrant workers and their family members who are moving or have moved to Satakunta region in Finland. The secondary target group are employers who want to recruit from abroad. The goal of participants: 150 persons. The actual number: 182 persons.
Finanzierungsart und benötigte Ressourcen
The project is funded by the European Social Fund (ESF). The total budget of the project is 792 780 euros.
