Abstract (EN)

20 short films focusing on four fundamental aspects of daily life (family, work, art and the idea of “here and there”) were created collectively by participants of 5 different groups of migrants who live in Greece, and have trained together with Greeks in the techniques of documentary and participatory video.

Angelegenheit/Herausforderung und
Ziele/Annahmen

Third country nationals’ integration is a mission of supreme moral, political, economic and humanitarian importance and it is not an unidirectional task. On the contrary, it is an interactive practice which involves both natives and migrants. The “Video life stories” project focuses on the collective artistic creation by the members of a team, who become directors by filming their own audiovisual work and observing themselves and their community. Unlike the conventional learning of a technical skill, in this case the target is shifted to the actual process of the performance with emphasis on active and equal participation of all members of the group aiming to empower. The scenarios of life stories, which are decided and planned by the trainees themselves, rely either on the approach of observational documentary or on semi-structured interviews. As a result, the project’s methodology is fully in line with contemporary international scientific standards concerning the issue of migrant integration and constitutes an innovating, best practice in Greek migration policy.

Wie funktioniert das?

The project consisted of the following actions:

  1. Scientific documentation (Supervision and coordination; Secretarial and scientific support)
  2. Administrative support (Financial and accounting management; Purchase of equipment)
  3. Coordinators’ seminar (Preparation of the training material; Selection and training of the coordinators)
  4. Production of video life stories (Selection of the trainees and getting in touch with migrant communities; Training the trainees and filming in the field; Translation of video material; Montage and final editing).
  5. Project publicity and dissemination (Website and DVD creation; Communication and information activities; Organization and implementation of film projections)
  6. Quality assurance (Internal assessment; External evaluation)
Ergebnisse

“Video life stories” project results (20 high quality films, 40 trainees, 3 film presentations in television, internet and festivals, 150 DVDs and 500 project booklets) are multifaceted, because they show the dynamics of cross-cultural exchange through memory and life stories, they highlight the migrant identity in flux by using a common artistic expression and they contribute to a new understanding of social integration by putting emphasis on joint training and the creative use of audiovisual art forms.

Evaluierung

The project has been successfully completed, responding to all the targets presented in the original proposal, thus contributing to the integration policy of migrants and the promotion of intercultural dialogue. Participatory video methodology multiplied the involvement of migrants and Greeks as a team and secured interaction, reflection and self-criticism.

Wer profitiert?

The project involved Egyptians in Thessaloniki, Albanians in Crete, Indians in Attica, Nigerians and Ukrainians in Athens, as well as Greek citizens. The films’ artistic excellence and broad dissemination makes video life stories culturally accessible by other migrant groups.

Finanzierungsart
und benötigte Ressourcen

The project was implemented under the Annual Programme 2011 – Action 1.4/11 – Project 1.4.b/11 – “Video life stories of migrants”(total budget: 179.974,00 €) and was co-financed by the European Fund for the Integration of Third-Country Nationals (75%) and national funds (25%).
