Integrationshuset Kringlebakken is a house with many activities and a safe environment for women and girls - mainly with other ethnic backgrounds than Danish. The goal of Kringlebakken is that women, their children and girls can find support in learning Danish, gaining knowledge about how Danish society works, finding friends, participating in ordinary club activities and that girls can get help with their homework. There are only female employees, and there are no men in the house in order to ensure that gender relations do not become a barrier for attending.

Ziele/Annahmen

The course group wants to strengthen the women’s resources and competences in order for them to be able to act in family life, education wise and in their working life. One way of strengthening the women's resources is by increasing their knowledge about the institutional structure and the Danish language. In the girls club, emphasis is on strengthening the girls’ proficiency, self-dependence and breaking with social isolation by rebuilding the girls’ self-confidence and giving them some concrete tools to manage school, create a network etc. With the activities as a basis for keeping the women and children in the program, the expectation has been to maintain about 30 women and 20-25 children annually in the course group.

Wie funktioniert das?

The course group teaches the Danish language to young women and gives them insight into Danish society and culture –with a special focus on the institutional culture of Danish day nurseries, kindergartens and schools. The teaching is conversation based with special focus on the women’s individual needs. The course group also gives individual guidance in order for the women to make active choices in the future and furthermore they provide network inspiring activities in order for the women to socialize. The girl club has homework assistance, general guidance provided by grown-ups and excursions for the girls.

Ergebnisse

The course group has managed to maintain about 30 women and 20-25 children annually in the course group from 2007 to 2009 (see evaluation from 2009). The expected course activities have also been carried out. The women have, among other things, become more sufficient in the Danish language and gained insight in the Danish society and culture. The girls club has kept a target group of about 50 girls per year since 2007 (see evaluation from 2010), and has achieved its goals of strengthening the girls’ proficiency, self-dependence and breaking with social isolation by rebuilding the girls’ self-confidence and giving them some concrete tools to manage school, create a network etc. Many of the women feel that they have become more self-dependent, have gained a social network and started to make active choices about their future after participating in the course group. The girls feel more motivated in school, and feel that they have greater capabilities in school because of the homework assistance.

Evaluierung

In August 2009, an action evaluation of the course group and the playroom were made. Furthermore in 2010, an action evaluation of the girls club’s goals, methods and effects were conducted. Both evaluations were authored by Charlotte Holm and supported by Bispebjerg Lokaludvalg, Oak Foundation. In both evaluations, it is stated that the participants have gained greater knowledge of the Danish society. The girls club has achieved its goals of strengthening the girls’ proficiency, self-dependence and breaking with social isolation by rebuilding the girls’ self-confidence and giving them some concrete tools to manage school, create a network etc. However, resources are scarce, which often means that external cooperation is not prioritized.

Wer profitiert?

The Danish society gains from the project when the women are integrated. The women in the project benefit as they learn how to navigate in Danish society by gaining knowledge of the Danish institutional structure, language and culture.

Finanzierungsart
und benötigte Ressourcen

Kringlebakken has had agreements with the social service department of Copenhagen’s municipality running over a four year period. These agreements have to be negotiated every fourth year, and the politicians have to decide whether they want Kringlebakken to continue. Because of these agreements Kringlebakken is also dependent on other forms of funding (see link on Kringlebakken’s webpage in Danish)
