Abstract (EN)

The evaluations of PISA studies in 2006 and 2009 showed the necessity of raising awareness of the need for greater integration of foreign national students. In this framework, this project organizes a national level competition where children and teenagers between 10 and 18 years old can present their ideas and projects to improve the management of cultural diversity in schools and youth centres.

Angelegenheit/Herausforderung und
Ziele/Annahmen

Qualitative objectives:

  • Promote a better management of cultural diversity and raise awareness of young people, teachers and society about the positive aspects of multiculturalism and equality of opportunities in education.
  • Encourage the active participation of projects related to multiculturalism in school and extracurricular work with young people.
  • Influence the programmes of policy makers and stakeholders in education and youth policy, as well as educational organizations for teachers, school boards, school parents’ associations, cities and FEMP (Spanish federation of cities and provinces).
  • Show Spanish society a positive image of cultural diversity.

Quantitative objectives:

Raise consciousness:

  • 3 million students
  • 430.000 teachers -

Public opinion through the media: 17 millions

Wie funktioniert das?

Students are encouraged to participate in a contest about integration where presented projects must answer to the motto ‘Integration through education’. Groups or individuals could do the inscription through the webpage to show their innovative ideas or projects. Projects and ideas that could be carried out in an independent manner and could improve integration in schools with the active participation and support of teachers. The presented ideas are evaluated, using specific and clear criteria, by an outside examiner and an independent jury composed by renowned members of Spanish society. The main award is the visit of a prominent and exemplary ‘ambassador’ of foreign origin to the school in order to meet the winners and share experiences with them.

Ergebnisse
  • The project reached 3.063.425 students (of whom 554.589 were from foreign origin) and 436.606 teachers, headmasters, social work employees and third sector employees; -
  • Celebrated on 3 occasions (2010, 2011, 2012) around 120 participants have presented more than 100 good ideas to manage cultural diversity;
  • between 7 and 30 projects made it to the final round of the contest;
  • 3 meetings of the jury, where 20 influential people participated;
  • Cooperation agreements with 4 relevant organizations and 9 ‘ambassadors’;
  • 6 radio emissions, 15 videos, 2 short animation films and a comic;
  • More than 15.000 visits in the webpage and more than 17.000 visits in the YouTube channel;
  • 5 talks with high-level experts in the areas of interculturality and formation;
  • 10 articles in specialized media, 2 about formation, youth and cultural diversity;
  • Participation in 4 seminars of cultural diversity, formation and youth, as well as national and international conferences.
Evaluierung

Based on the proposed objectives, the project carried out a systematic self-assessment: -

  • Monitoring the response of the media during the whole process
  • Reports on the meetings of the jury members and the meetings of the youth assessor group.
  • Visits on the webpage and the YouTube channel were analyzed.
  • During the project, close and regular contacts were maintained with teachers (it was attempted to take into account the difficult situation of education in Spain due to the economic crises), with youth assessor group (they were asked about materials or potential ‘ambassadors’), with students (they were also implicated with the elaboration of materials)
  • The project also underwent an external evaluation: This work was carried out by the director of the Master on Migration and Interculturality of the University of Castilla la Mancha (UCLM) who evaluated the projects presented in the contest and also served as consultant for the project.
