Abstract (EN)

Main task of the project – to establish Multicultural volunteering centre by creating the possibility for Lithuanian society and third-country nationals to interact with each other, adapt to diversity and improve mutual understanding. It was planned that 200 members of Lithuanian society and 100 third-country nationals will visit the centre. Both target groups, third-country nationals and Lithuanian society were able to participate in project activities, to learn and teach their own native language, participate in educational-reflective discussions, mentors’ trainings, ‘Living library’, take part in sport competitions, cultural events, multicultural summer camp, other. A photo exhibition was organised, where moments from different MVC activities were captured and presented. An exhibition was open for the public. People had an opportunity to see good practices of interaction between Lithuanians and foreigners. 5 TV shows about MVC were broadcasted and a project manual about volunteering experiences in a multicultural environment was prepared and released.

Angelegenheit/Herausforderung und
Ziele/Annahmen

Research in Lithuania shows that Lithuanian society is intolerant towards migrants, especially those who are coming from distant countries. Research evidences that foreigners do not feel safe as most of them have experienced discrimination due to their different looks. Consequently, the main goal of the Multicultural volunteering centre was to create the possibility for Lithuanian society and third-country nationals to interact with each other, adapt to diversity and improve mutual understanding, hoping that interaction between Lithuanians and foreigners will help to break existing stereotypes and minimise discrimination.

Wie funktioniert das?

During the whole project, many Lithuanians and foreigners from third-countries have visited the centre. One of the first activities was the training of mentors, where a wide network of volunteers and 30 mentors were trained. Volunteers and mentors had an opportunity to stay in the project for the whole period. The most successful activities were cultural events, where people from different countries had an opportunity to introduce their own culture, prepare food, teach traditional dances, etc. The ‘Living Library’, which was organised with Vilnius African Community, was also successful part of the Project. More than 1340 schoolchildren were introduced to African culture, music and dances. Lithuanian society was actively involved by volunteering and teaching foreigners the Lithuanian language (at the same time foreigners had an opportunity to teach their own language). Thirty different educational-reflective discussions were organised on various social topics such as equal opportunities, human rights, employees’ rights and responsibilities, homelessness, etc. Five different activities based on different experiences were organised, where foreigners and Lithuanians participated in challenging activities and reflected on their own views after. Two multicultural sports competitions (football and basketball) were organised. Finally, 30 people had an opportunity to participate in the summer camp. The programme of the camp encompassed various discussions, workshops and multicultural events.
