Abstract (EN)

Sometimes the best way to break down barriers and fight down stereotypes is through a simple conversation. Through a unique travelling library program called the Living Library (Biblioteca Humana), students in Valongo, Portugal, have the opportunity to hear and exchange life stories with others in their communities. Organized to visit schools, the Living Library allows students to hear first-hand about the experiences of individuals from diverse backgrounds (the “books”) who have faced prejudice in their daily lives.

Angelegenheit/Herausforderung und
Ziele/Annahmen

The goal of the project is to create a space capable of hosting the Living Library, allowing readers to have a safe place to ask challenging questions, and also to create a network of people, NGO’s and governmental bodies that can cooperate in the identification of human books and dissemination of all stages of the project. Moreover, the project also intends to empower local agents through the involvement in all of its stages and to create and promote partnership networks to promote a true institutional dialogue in the municipality concerning human rights.

Wie funktioniert das?

Living Library is delivered in cooperation with local schools. In this project there is an element of itinerancy, as it visits the different schools of the municipality. Before the implementation of the activity a meeting with a teacher takes place; during this meeting the necessary steps to prepare the activity in each class are explained. Afterwards, each teacher debates with its class the goals of the Living Library and prepares in advance some questions to present to the books and also students for a lively conversation with the guest “books.”; this ensures that the youngsters do not become blocked during the interaction with the human books. Modeled playfully on a regular school library, the class visits the library and reserves a ‘book’ for a limited period of time. Of course, the books are real people telling real stories, and it does not take long before living book and teenage ‘readers’ are engaged in a dialogue. The books in the Living Library are volunteers representing diverse community groups, such as immigrants, gay/lesbian/bissexual, Roma people, Muslims, blind or visualy impaired people, who are often victims of discrimination or social exclusion. At least 4 different human books should be available to be read. There is a “librarian” (person from the municipality) who creates 4 small groups in each class, gives the instructions, makes sure the activity is evaluated, etc. Each group talks to the human book, posing questions for about 20 minutes, listening to life stories and talking about their own prejudices and stereotypes.. When this period of time ends, the groups exchange human books and restart reading it. This process continues until every group has been with all the books. Examples of stereotypes are: ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability, and, of course, multiple discrimination. The goal is to deconstruct stereotypes based on the slogan: “don’t judge a book by its cover”. Finally, the activity is evaluated and teachers integrate it during classes.

Ergebnisse

The Living Library project has been recognized for its efforts to address discrimination by breaking down stereotypes and promoting interculturality. What began as a project of 6 schools and 413 students has now spread to 8 schools, 860 students and engages 10 volunteers (living books) The Living Library has been recognized by the Alto Comissariado para a Integração e Diálogo Intercultural (the National Mechanism for Immigration and Intercultural Dialogue) as a best-practice and is being replicated across Portugal, in cooperation with immigrant NGOs such as Pontos nos Is and Amizade de Leste. The Value Difference project also received a national prize, “Melhores Práticas Autárquicas em integração de imigrantes 2010” (Best Practices in the Integration of Immigrants 2010), for work that included a three-day Interculturality Fair, an Immigrant Employment space, a job fair and a business expo – in addition to its Living Library. It was also distinguished by the Supra-Municipal Territorial Platform of Greater Oporto area as a best practice concerning the empowerment of immigrants (2011). In 2012 it was recognized as a best-practice by the website Cities of Migration and included in “Good Ideas in Integration”. Finally in 2013 it was considered a best educational practice by its innovation by the Catholic University of Oporto and by the Metropolitan Area of Oporto.

Evaluierung

Quantitative evaluation: 1. Calculation of the number of people involved in each activity and the end of the activity; 2. Calculation of the number of actions done by our initiative and by initiative of the partner network. Qualitative evaluation: 1. Gathering and analysis of media coverage during the life cycle of the project; 2. Analysis of qualitative anonymous questionnaires of people that participate in activities and human resources of the project.

Wer profitiert?

The target audience consisted of youngsters that are at school, aged between 14 and 18. However, the whole school community was envisaged, as well as their networks because they had to contact with it (at least in an indirect way, through observation or listening to stories about it).

Finanzierungsart
und benötigte Ressourcen

The Living Library has been founded by the High Commissioner for Immigration and Intercultural Dialogue (Alto Comissariado para a Integração e Diálogo Intercultural – ACIDI, IP). However, due to its success and low budget it can be easily implemented even without this kind of support. This work is done in cooperation with several NGO’s: NGO Pontos nos Is (area of intervention: immigration), NGO Amizade de Leste (area of intervention: immigration), NGO ACAPO (area of intervention: disability), NGO Rede Ex aequo (area of intervention: sexual orientation), and schools of the municipality, Centro Cultural Islâmico do Porto (Muslim religious group). In 2013-2014 there will be new books such as mental illness.
