Abstract (EN)

The Ethnic Friendly Employer (EFE) is a brand that awards those Czech employers who declare their support to equal treatment to ethnically different population, i. e. those whose are visibly different from the majority and may be facing prejudices and negative stereotypes, and fulfill this principle on a long-term basis in personal practice. The idea is to create a specific and visible symbol comprehensible to the majority population as well as ethnically disadvantaged groups. The EFE brand is awarded after personal inquiry by the employer, executed by IQ Roma Service or by partner organizations Romea and Charita Olomouc.

Angelegenheit/Herausforderung und
Ziele/Annahmen

The recruitment strategies of the majority of employers on the Czech labour market still reflect common attitudes and stereotypes to job applicants from minority groups. In addition, lots of these applicants are rejected by employers without any specific reason. The project Ethnic Friendly Employer is a reaction to persistent employment discrimination against ethnic minorities in the Czech Republic, especially (but not only) against the Roma. The EFE brand aims to create and develop corporate culture that ensures equal treatment conditions at work as well as at labour recruitment, and results in:

  • more effective use of labour and positive working environment;
  • job applicants motivated to get a job with a welcoming employer;
  • motivated and loyal employees with good relationships among themselves as well as to the company;
  • acceptance of one of CSR principles in commercial subjects and building good reputation, which is part of marketing strategies.
Wie funktioniert das?

The basic step for awarding the EFE brand to an employer is the objective investigation in order to verify non-discriminatory approaches. The process of certification and promotion of the EFE brand consists of 5 consecutive steps:

  1. contacting employers
  2. performing investigations to define the level of equal treatment in the company
  3. supporting the employer to ensure equal treatment
  4. certifying the employer in a ceremony
  5. presenting and promoting the issue of equal treatment in employment, Ethnic Friendly Employers and good practice examples in the media.
Ergebnisse

IQ Roma Service has been awarding the EFE certification since June 2007. In 2011, two more certifying authorities were added (Romea and Charity Olomouc). Until December 2012, more than 2000 employers were addressed with the possibility of gaining the EFE brand. 58 employers were awarded. A part of the project has been the media campaign fighting prejudice and stereotypes:

  • the video 'Invisible' broadcasted on national TV
  • nationwide poster and web campaign 'Roma work and want to work'.
Evaluierung

The compliance is monitored by the objective investigation procedure that is carried out by certifying institutions. The awarded employers are re-examined every year with regard to their compliance with the Rules for Using the EFE Brand. The number of employees of various ethnicities could be monitored only by relevant social services providers/certifying institutions that closely cooperates with awarded employers and job seekers of different ethnic origin. The evaluation can be, however, performed mostly by estimation as the collection of ethnic data is not legally allowed in the Czech Republic.

Wer profitiert?
  • Employers - the EFE brand should serve for raising positive profiles of employers openly advocating the principle of equal treatment of their employees and job applicants.
  • Employees- the EFE logo clearly indicates a non-discriminatory employer and works as a guarantee of equal treatment during the selection procedure and in the work process.
  • Public - the EFE brand helps to objectively identify entities supporting equal treatment and to fight negative stereotypes in the whole society.
