Abstract (EN)

The online Latvian dictionary “e-Pupa” was created to enhance the use of online resources by pupils and teachers either learning or teaching the Latvian language. The online dictionary is available free of charge (users only need to register to acquire access). It is a unique, multifunctional and rich resource that includes etymologic, word formation, grammatical and lexical information, with rich materials about folklore and the use of words in different contexts. The dictionary helps pupils to become more interested in the learning process, enhances cognitive action and improves their sociocultural, linguistic and communication competences.

Angelegenheit/Herausforderung und
Ziele/Annahmen

This initiative addresses the lack of online materials to learn and improve the knowledge of the Latvian language. As the online Latvian dictionary “e-Pupa” is available online, anyone with internet access can use it.

Wie funktioniert das?

The online dictionary is available free of charge to anyone interested in learning or analysing the Latvian language. The user only needs to register and he/ she immediately acquires access to “E-pupa”. The resource is also included as a material in the training courses to teachers provided by the Latvian Language Agency.

Ergebnisse

By April 2013 the online Latvian dictionary “e-Pupa” had approximately 1500 registered users. It is used by teachers enhancing pupils to conduct independent tasks during the study process. The resources is also used by Latvian children and their parents living outside of Latvia. The dictionary has also been praised by teachers working with disabled children.

Evaluierung

An evaluation of the tool will be conducted in 2015.

Wer profitiert?

The first target group of the resource is pupils in secondary and high schools conducting teaching bilingually (in Latvian and a minority language). The other target group is teachers, pupils, students and academic personel from education institutions in Latvia, as well as Diaspora pupils, teachers and parents (Latvians living abroad), and third country nationals living in Latvia. The aim of the project is to reach 10 thousand users.

Finanzierungsart
und benötigte Ressourcen

The initiative is funded by the European Social Fund and Latvian state budget. The dictionary was created by using different sources of literature, linguistic data basis, as well as cooperating with museums. Several authors, editors, programmers and designers were involved in the work, in addition to project coordination staff. The overall budget of the project was LVL 95 000 (approximately 135 000 Euro).
