Abstract (EN)

We are a group of researchers at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki who work on language development and bilingualism in children and adults. Our aim is to bridge the gap between academia and society by informing bilingual families, educators, and policy makers about the benefits and the costs of bilingualism. We offer information sessions and consultancies to schools, parents, national and international organizations.  We are also ready to engage with policy makers in an advisory role and contribute to reports on the promotion of bilingualism and multilingualism in Greek society.

Angelegenheit/Herausforderung und
Ziele/Annahmen

Our Goals:

  • Raise awareness among bilingual families, educators and policy makers of the facts and advantages of bilingualism.
  • Contribute to the establishment of communication channels and resources for the encouragement of bilingualism in Greek schools and families in Greece.
  • Contribute to inform on good public language strategies for promoting bilingualism from early childhood.
  • Identify knowledge gaps where dissemination of research on bilingualism is especially needed (including questions on bilingualism and language delay or impairment)

Wie funktioniert das?

We offer information sessions, informal and formal talks and consultancies to schools, nurseries and other venues to provide accessible information about bilingualism and its effects on thought processes as well as language abilities. Also, we are in contact with international organizations that engage with policy makers in an advisory role and we contribute to reports and consultations concerned with the promotion of multilingualism in Greece.

Research Results that relate to our goals

  • We have already responded to invitations for talks and open discussions in the last year.
  • Our information service highlights the necessity to develop literacy skills in both L1 and L2
  • Currently the Bilingual acquisition and Language Education -Thalis project (2012-2015) carries out research on different types of bilingual children concentrating on language & cognitive development. Results will be disseminated through the information service ‘Me 2 glosses’ as well.
  • Within the framework of COST Action IS0804 “Language Impairment in a Multilingual Society: Linguistic Patterns and the Road to Assessment”, various tools for investigating abilities in cognitive and linguistic tasks in bilingual children with and without language delay or impairment have been developed. We inform audiences about the results from this research in an accessible and informative way.
  • Extensive research carried out in the Language Development Lab of the School of English at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki contributes to our knowledge of bilingualism with Greek as one of the two languages of the bilingual individual.
  • Eye-tracking methodology available in the above Lab is used to carry out up-to-date research on aspects of bilingual performance in language tasks.
  • Our dissemination activities so far have been met with considerable positive responses as is the case from e-mail messages, oral feedback and reactions to media announcements.

Evaluierung

Evaluation Points

  • Positive feedback from parents and educators
  • E-mail contact with parents of bilingual children (living in and outside Greece)

Advice and assistance in organizing weekly classes for literacy development in the L1 of bilingual children

Wer profitiert?

Our target population:

  • Bilingual children and families in Greece
  • Educators, speech and language specialists/therapists
  • 10% of Greek students are bilingual (around 95.000 students)
  • With respect to the expected coverage of the programme, we hope to reach most cross-cultural schools, foreign organizations and clubs and state schools in the area of Thessaloniki. Since members of the information service are actively engaged in similar dissemination activities in Athens, we hope to reach an extended audience in due course. We have already presented talks and information in other areas especially in cross-cultural schools.
