Abstract (EN)

The primary aim of our English Language & Mentoring project is to increase the community participation and integration of young, newly migrant women.

Angelegenheit/Herausforderung und
Ziele/Annahmen

Ultimately we aim to equip women with the knowledge and skills they need in order to tackle the barriers to community cohesion and employment they face upon their arrival in the UK. By making participants feel more welcome in their new country we give incentives for them to feel responsible for their new community and as such increase their contribution towards it.

Wie funktioniert das?

The project is rooted in the delivery of 10 months of twice weekly, 2 hour, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes but through our 1 hour a week Mentoring programme we develop the language and life skills learnt in ESOL classes by introducing participants to the host society’s language, history, institutions, socio economic features, cultural life and fundamental norms and values. Field trips are a further, integral part of the course, bringing what is studied in the classroom in to real life.

Ergebnisse

The ESOL & Mentoring Project is supported by a variety of educational classes and both regular and one off social events. Coffee morning language practice and English language movie clubs support conversation practice and language progression as well as the forging of friendships. The multi-cultural make up of the course is celebrated at events throughout the year and with great opportunities for an array of volunteering positions we represent every area of London.

Evaluierung

Ongoing projects with women migrants, integration and employment have been endorsed, with funding renewed for new rounds in 2013, by - among others - the Evan Cornish Foundation and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The next round of the project is taking enrolments for a February 2013 start.
