Abstract (EN)

Etnoweb is an internet news portal for the groups of national minority, which was created on the principle of civil journalism. The participants of the project were able to study and train for multimedia journalism, to get a practice and a mentoring course.

The most important classes were recorded on video (e.g. rules of writing news, photo composition and editing, video creating and editing, and interviewing). Based on these lectures an electronic mini-course was created and posted on the educational section of Etnoweb portal. It is free of charge and is available to the public.

There is also assistance available for new portal users who have just registered and are willing to start using the website’s options. Estonia's neighbouring countries Finland and Latvia with their Russian-speaking minority have also shown interest in this course.

The need for training in citizen journalism can be felt in all areas of civil society.

Angelegenheit/Herausforderung und
Ziele/Annahmen

In the beginning of the project, the portal Etnoweb with the help of Ministry of Culture of Estonia, organized two basic media trainings with 55 participants. All participants were the representatives of national minorities.

The goal of this project was to teach 15 students the basics of journalism (11 of them are citizens or citizens of those countries that are not EU members). Thanks to the interactive multimedia on-line course in Russian, which is the common language for the national minorities in Estonia, the competence of the infinite number of bloggers, civil society in the region will increase.

Wie funktioniert das?

Survey and round table conversations highlighted the expectations (such as appropriate news writing, experts questioning, citation issues, interviewing, working with photo and video materials) and the potential of the project members abilities.

The project was carried out in Russian. In started with 30 hours of theory in December. The meeting with editors and a selection of individual mentors among professional journalists took place in January. The mentoring program lasted until the end of March and consisted of 30 hours. The submission and discussion of completed works and materials as well as presentation of the diploma took place in April. A short and free of charge online course on civil journalism was ready in May.

Ergebnisse

Based on the survey feedback of the 15 graduates, the project increased the quality and journalistic value of the information that passed through the national groups, as well as making the information sharing more regular. During the project the representatives of national minorities made contacts and obtained experience in cooperation and in information sharing. The participants developed good relationships with project mentors, who are working professional journalists. Growing mutual trust helped the journalists to start paying more attention to the life and work of non-EU immigrants, as well as to the importance of intercultural dialogue. Also  the understanding for the preservation of national cultures grew, an idea that is also supported by the European Union and the Estonian Government. On the other hand, Non-EU immigrants are now able to follow local media channels better than ever before.

Evaluierung

A feedback survey was conducted among all the participants (about 30 people) and mentors (about 10 journalists). Also the frequency and visibility of the project in the media was analysed.

During the duration of the project, the amount of original articles on Etnoweb website doubled; there was also about 10 exclusive articles published in the public press, which were written by the students with the help of their mentors (professional journalists). Two of the graduates were offered a job in the local newspaper, where they are now working. In addition, a new broadcast for the youth listeners was created.

It is very important to monitor students and inspire them, since they often lack the courage to express themselves and work effectively with several mentors. It is necessary to build a strong team and promote personal relations by organizing meetings and seminars.

Wer profitiert?

This course was created for people of any age: school children, students, bloggers, public figures, civil society activists, i.e. for those people, who want to be heard, noticed and understood correctly. However, this course will be useful not only for civilian journalists, but also for professionals working with specific topics or in a specific field. This multimedia course will allow editors, camera operators, photographers to expand their boundaries. It gives systematic understanding of the processes taking place “on the other side of the barricades”,  to the heroes of the news as it were, to newsmakers and to PR-experts. First and foremost, the course was oriented to minorities. As a result of the project, the voice of minorities gets "louder", trust-based relationships are established between national minorities and the members of liberal media, which contributes to the destruction of stereotypes in society.
