The field of Lusophone Studies spans continents and countries, making it a transnational and cosmopolitan academic area that includes the study of approximately 250 million speakers of Portuguese in the world today. This includes nations and territories such as Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guiné-Bissau, Portugal, Macau, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe.

Decades of significant transnational migration of Portuguese speakers has also resulted in significant Lusophone immigrant populations, which are now scattered in large communities throughout the world, with major concentrations in the United States, Canada, France, Brazil, and South Africa as well as other world destinations. Lusophone Studies ? the study of this Portuguese-speaking world includes a broad multidisciplinary area with many cosmopolitan perspectives that have contributed to this diaspora and to the Portuguese language today. In terms of both historical past and contemporary settings, Lusophone lives have been shaped by factors that range from historical, social, political and economic circumstances, to established and new migration patterns between Lusophone and non-Lusophone countries. The outcome is visible in the geographical and ethno-cultural development of many Lusophone identities in many countries. Lusophone Studies focuses on these perspectives and intersections in interdisciplinary ways in order to create an inclusive study of current issues that relate to this historical legacy.

The organizing committee is seeking individual papers on various aspects of Lusophone Studies. The following major themes will be examined:

  • Lusophone Migration and Transnationalism: New Trends
  • Historical Perspectives and Cosmopolitanism
  • Literature and Lusofonies
  • Lusophone Cultural and Aesthetic Dialogues
  • Global Education and the Lusophone World
  • Citizenship and Interculturality
  • Lusophony in the Digital Era
  • Sports and Identities
