In the framework of the 7FP Marie Curie Training Network “Integration and international migration: pathways and integration policies”, the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning at the University of Lisbon will be hosting the second scientific thematic workshop organized by the working group on “Urban Integration, Residential Patterns and Mobility”.
The working group aims to explore three sets of issues: housing policies and social cohesion; urban and ethnic segregation; and social integration policies and equitable cities. This second workshop will explore recent debates on ethnic residential segregation in urban areas. The residential concentration or clustering of minority and ethnic groups in urban areas is often interpreted as a symptom of social fragmentation or failed integration. However, in the light of increased everyday mobility, new forms of social networking and other dynamic forms of segregation across space, the study of urban integration and the assumed social effects of ethnic clustering cannot be limited to the neighbourhood of residence. This workshop will explore the theoretical and methodological implications of encompassing new forms of mobility and networking in the urban integration research agenda.
