On 18th September 2014, people living in Scotland will be asked to answer yes or no to the question 'Should Scotland be an independent country?' By any estimation, this is a momentous question for all of Scotland's citizens, including those of ethnic minority heritage.
This has never been more important than with the journey and debates towards Referendum 2014. For the first time there will be a democratic opportunity to consider the place of Scotland in not only the UK, but also internationally; and for us all to reach our personal thoughts and decision as to whether Scotland remains part of the UK or becomes independent.
A significant milestone towards Referendum 2014 was the publication in November 2013 of The Scottish Government's White Paper on Independence, 'Scotland's Future'. This sets out in detail what an independent Scotland may look like, so regardless of one's view on independence, it is an important document; and one which BEMIS and CEMVO Scotland, will facilitate direct dialogue upon.
However as part of the collaboration between CEMVO and BEMIS, the Ethnic Minorities 3rd Sector Network [EM3SN], are facilitating focused events aimed at providing a platform for diverse Ethnic Minority communities/groups to learn about and discuss the White Paper shortly after its publication. The aim of the events will therefore be to assist the diverse communities in being proactively involved with the content and context of the White Paper in preparation for the independence referendum and to provide an opportunity to respond to the Scottish Government’s White Paper
