Active participation of migrants in the trade union movement is an overwhelming factor in integration. It is also a way to ensure equal treatment in the workplace and in the labour market. In this way, trade unions (and industrial relations in general) play a role in avoiding further fragmentation of the labour market and society as a whole. Three parallel workshops will be held during the conference to better focus on innovative solutions that social partners have found in the field of collective bargaining and access to labour market facilities, providing services to migrants, and ensuring membership of migrants and their active participation in trade union life. The conference will encourage an exchange around the following themes:
Sharing know-how and capacity building concerning labour mobility and integration facilities;
Promoting migrants' membership and participation in the internal life of TUs;
Creating a Europe-wide network to facilitate the exchange of practices, as well as co-managing existing and new services;
Improving the visibility and accessibility of the services provided by trade unions by also using a common EU label;
Improving collection of data to better monitor flows and levels of migrants.
Trade union action integrates public authorities in providing assistance to third-country nationals. Cuts to public budgets undermine assistance to migrants provided by the State or local authorities. This is one reason more for preserving the capacity to assist migrants that trade unions have developed so far.
