On Tuesday, May 14, at the Kalnciems quarter cultural centre, a Roundtable will take place on "Education for everyone: WE only, not THEM in School” in cooperation with non-governmental, academic and state actors. Education and immigration experts, representatives of the immigrant population - parents, students, and professionals - will discuss the availability and quality of education for immigrant students.

The Roundtable is organised by the Think-and-Do tank "Global Development Institute" in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science, in the framework of  Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Commission-funded project SIRIUS: European Policy Network on the education of children and young people with a migrant background.

The aim of the National Round Table discussion is to identify issues and best practices and analyze the integration of immigrant children and youth in the Latvian education system. A special focus will be made on ways to prevent early school leaving among immigrant children and youngsters.

Agenda for Discussion includes the exploration of relevant countries - the statistics, findings from recent studies, results of the SIRIUS study carried out in 2012. Emphasis will be made on the educational needs of immigrants and solutions proposed by the state education authorities.  It is planned for participants to discuss the necessary changes in education policy with regard to access to education for immigrant children and youth, and its quality.

The SIRIUS network will be represented by General Coordinator, Dr.paed. Miquel Àngel Essomba Gelabert, Director of the UNESCO Centre of Catalonia,  professor of Pedagogy of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, director of the research group ERIC (Team for Research in Immigration and Multiculturalism in Catalonia) and consultant to the City Council and the Government of Catalonia in matters of education and cultural diversity.

SIRIUS is a European Policy Network on the education of children and young people with migrant background. The essential mission of the SIRIUS policy network is to promote and enhance the knowledge transfer among stakeholders in order to improve the education of children and youngsters from migrant background. Mission is based on three actions: Knowledge transfer; Influencing policy development and implementation; Bringing together partners from EU countries and key stakeholders, including policy makers, researchers, practitioners, representatives of migrant communities, NGOs, international organizations, etc. More information on SIRIUS is available here
