On 29 January 2016, Statistics Lithuania organised an annual press conference. The annual press conference is an important event, when Statistics Lithuania reviews, from different perspectives, how the country succeeded in the past year.
At the press conference, Director General Vilija Lapėnienė presented the main country’s economic and social indicators for 2015: GDP, inflation, industrial, foreign and domestic trade, enterprise, construction, transport, agricultural indicators and their changes, the demographic situation, the scale of emigration and immigration, employment, unemployment, consumer opinion indicators.
In 2015, the GDP continued growing, the unemployment rate was on the decrease, real earnings and household final consumption expenditure – on the increase. Although the economic growth was slower than previously, steady positive changes were observed in almost all economic sectors.
35 second-year students of the Design Faculty of Vilnius College of Technologies and Design with their professors Jonas Malinauskas and Jonas Liugaila participated in the event dedicated to World Statistics Day. Specialists of Statistics Lithuania helped the students understand numbers. During the workshop the students learned about the official statistics and designed information graphics presenting statistical messages in an attractive way. The work of students was a pleasant surprise for statisticians as their information graphics were picturesque and informative.
On 20 October 2015, Lithuania, together with many other countries of the world, celebrated the World Statistics Day.
A conference dedicated to the World Statistics Day took place in the Government Office. It was attended by the representatives of the Government, institutions producing official statistics and providing administrative data for statistical purposes, members of the Statistical Council and the Lithuanian Statistical Society, representatives of the media, academic community, employees of Statistics Lithuania and other members of the national statistical community.
The World Statistics Day, celebrated for the second time, was dedicated to highlighting the importance of reliable and objective official statistics. The Director General of Statistics Lithuania Vilija Lapėnienė emphasised that statistical quality requires several preconditions: first, accurate primary statistical data provided by respondents (enterprises, individuals, administrative sources – State registers); second, well-educated and professional staff, able to apply advanced and reliable statistical methods; and, third, professional independence of statistical authorities. “Do all those three preconditions exist in Lithuania? In one word – yes”, – affirmed Vilija Lapėnienė.
At the conference, speeches were also given by the representatives of the main official statistics user groups – advisor to the SEB Bank president, financial analyst Gitanas Nausėda, deputy editor-in-chief of a daily Verslo žinios (Business News) Irma Verbienė. At the end of the celebration, a family of musicians – Raminta, Augustas and Benas Gocentas – performed musical compositions.
