The ESC is a new competition organized by Eurostat and volunteering National Statistical Institutes addressed to secondary education students.
The main objectives of the ESC are to promote curiosity and interest in statistics among students, to encourage teachers to use new materials for teaching statistics by promoting the use of real data provided by official statistics and search for applications of acquired statistical knowledge. Moreover, it aims to show the role of statistics to students and teachers in various aspects of society, and to promote teamwork and collaboration among students to achieve common goals.
As from January 1, 2018, Mr. Stavros Karageorgis is the new Director of the Statistical Service following a relevant appointment by the Public Service Commission in Cyprus.
Mr. Karageorgis is a graduate of Leicester University and has served in the Statistical Service since 1993. He served in all positions of the Statistical Service, until recently as Chief Statistics Officer. In his career he dealt with a wide range of statistical fields and represented the Statistical Service in various committees both in Cyprus and abroad.
The mission of the ESS is to provide all the citizens of the European Union with independent, high-quality information on the economy, society and environment on European, national and regional levels and make the information available to everyone for decisionmaking purposes, research and democratic debate. In the framework of the celebration of the European Statistics Day, CYSTAT has planned the following actions, which aim to promote the use of official statistics: 18 October 2017:
Disemination of the publication “The life of women and men in Europe”. The digital publication compares women and men in their daily lives. It also shows how similar or different the everyday life of women and men is in European countries.
20 October 2017: Launch of “European Statistics Olympics 2017”. The Statistical Service in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture and the University of Cyprus will organize for the first time in Cyprus the “European Statistics Olympics”. The contest will be held amongst secondary school students and the kick off day will be the 20th of October.
After working for almost 40 years in the area of official statistics, the last ten of which as the Director of the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT), Mr. George Chr. Georgiou has retired from his post on 1.5.2017.
The Public Service Commission has nominated Mr. Stavros Karageorghis, Head of the National Accounts, Public Finance, Foreign Trade and Agricultural Statistics Division as Acting Director of CYSTAT for the period 2.5.2017 – 31.10.2017. An open competition will soon be launched for the filling in of the post.
