The Croatian Bureau of Statistics will mark this year’s European Statistics Day with the presentation and launching of the Statistics Olympics on 20 October 2017.The Statistics Olympics (SO), as part of the European Statistics Olympics and the Eurostat project "Support for statistical literacy actions in the field of competition, gamification, e-learning”, is organised for the first time in Croatia in cooperation with the Algebra University College and the Croatian Statistical Association, under the special sponsorship of the Ministry of Science and Education and the support of the Agency for Vocational Education and Training and Adult Education as well as the Croatian County Association.
For that occasion, the CBS is organising an event where the CBS and SO ambassadors will have a roundtable discussion about the importance of the statistics, how to stimulate the curiosity and interest of high school students in statistics, how to encourage them to use actual data and apply acquired statistical knowledge and they will try to emphasise the importance of statistics in different aspects of society.
Since the European Day of Statistics is being celebrated in October, the Croatian Bureau of Statistics will have activities spanning the whole month through the "Back to basics" Project.
The goal of that project is to introduce the general public to frequently used, but also frequently misunderstood statistical concepts in an interesting and accessible way through eight videos. Three videos have been already published on the following themes: The Census of Population, Households and Dwellings, Population Estimates and Metadata.
More videos on the topics of Risk-of-Poverty Threshold, Median and Average, Seasonal Adjustment as well as Statistical Error will be soon available on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channel of the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.
October is the month in which we celebrate World Statistics Day, but this month is particularly important for the Croatian Bureau of Statistics (CBS) since on 19 October 2015 marks the 140th anniversary of official Croatian statistics. On this occasion the CBS prepared a short story “Life through the spectrum of numbers”, which illustrates how much life is accompanied with statistical data.
The CBS celebrated its 140th anniversary by holding a conference under the auspices of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, held at the Croatian Chamber of Economy. Participants were addressed by Mr. Marko Krištof, CBS’ Director General, followed by Branko Grčić, Vice President of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, who emphasised the importance of statistics in today's globalised world.
