People usually living at the country territory and who have not left it officially as of 31.12 of the reference year for a period more than 12 months

"Birth” is a complete expulsion or extraction from the mother of a foetus, irrespective alive or dead, that meet the following criteria: a) body weight at birth of 800 grams and over and / or 26 weeks of gestation; b) body weight at birth of less than 800 grams and / or less than 26 weeks of gestation - provided that the foetus was born alive and has lived at least 3 days. "Alive" is a foetus who shows signs of blood circulation.

According to Decree № 9/27.04.2021 "Birth” is a complete expulsion or extraction from the mother of a foetus, irrespective alive or dead, that meet the following criteria: a) body weight at birth of 700 grams and over and / or 25 weeks of gestation; b) less than 25 weeks of gestation - provided that the foetus was born alive and has lived at least 72 hours (3 days). "Alive" is a foetus who shows signs of blood circulation.

The event death is an intermission of the life functions of the constitution without any possibility for their recuperation Persons who have changed their usual residence abroad with a residence in Bulgaria and who have resided or have an intension to reside at the country territory more than 12 months.  Persons who have changed their usual residence in Bulgaria with a residence abroad and who have been absent or have an intention to be absent from the country for more than 12 months period.

Data for the population as of 01 January 2023 (31 December 2022) is calculated based on Census 2021, natural change and net migration.

In census years recalculations of the population are done as of the end of the respective and previous year. Recalculations are based on the census results and the respective calculations of the natural and migration increase, received from the current demographic statistics for the respective year

18.3. Data collection

Administrative data sources are used for production of official statistics. Data files are provided to NSI containing information on demographic events - births, deaths, marriages, divorces, change of address in the country, intenational migration

18.4. Data validation

Data validation is performed at three stages:

At data transmission – preliminary checking and processing, proper application of the criterion for12 months  length of stay . 

At data processing stage - criteria for doubling, correctness, validation rules for each record’s characteristic.

Before data release - checking the frequencies of separate variables, consistency of table and cross-tabulations.

18.5. Data compilation

Data are processed , edited and validated through the Information System Demography, respecting settled in advance system and logic criteria.

Records linkage is done based on Identification Number of the persons subject of a demographic event.

18.6. Adjustment

Еstimates (based on NSI sample survey on trips of Bulgarians abroad and visitors to Bulgaria) are done in production of breakdowns of emigrants by destination countries.

Since 2015, estimates and assumptions on volume of emigrants are done to improve figures produced both for emigration and population number.
